   Oxidation Numbers


The oxidation numbers of an element denote the positive or negative charge of an atom in a certain chemical compund. This is based on the hypothetical assumption that all atoms of the compound are ions. The oxidation numbers are usefull when setting up redox-equations. The table entries set in red color are the most important oxidation numbers.
